2016 ushered in the era of "smart meter"

According to a study by a foreign research institute GBI Research, with the rapid development of the market, it is expected that the annual compound annual growth rate of smart meters in China will reach 9.5% in 2013-2017. At the same time, the output of traditional electricity meters will drop sharply, and it is expected that the era of smart meters will be realized in 2016.

In 2012, China's electricity meter shipments reached 110.60 million, including 98.5 million smart meters. In recent years, with the rapid development of the smart meter market, manufacturers have expanded production to meet the needs of domestic and foreign markets. In 2013, China’s electric meter production capacity exceeded 120 million, of which 91% was smart meters.

At present, the replacement of domestic electricity meters with smart meters is dominated by the State Grid. According to the 2010 plan of State Grid, in order to meet the domestic demand for meter replacement, the State Grid will complete the security of 2.22 billion smart meters by 2014 and achieve full coverage of direct metering and smart metering in areas directly under the jurisdiction of the State Grid.

The 12th Five-Year Plan also lists smart meters as a key development direction, and the State Grid will fully promote the development of smart grids. As an important part of the smart grid, the demand for smart meters is bound to grow rapidly. It is expected that by 2015, China will install 230 million smart meters.

In addition, with the deepening reform of rural power grids and the implementation of ladder-type electricity prices in rural areas, it is expected that by 2017, the annual compound annual growth rate of the smart meter market in China will reach 9.5%. Even in 2016, China is expected to realize the era of smart meters.
