According to US media sources, 3DR announced that users of the Site Scan drone software platform for construction and engineering teams can now capture and use structurally detailed thermal imaging in their projects. This can now be achieved by integrating with the DJI M210 dual gimbal drone equipped with Zenmuse XT thermal imager and Zenmuse X4S, making it easy to capture and combine thermal and RGB images.

The automatic thermal mapping and modeling functions that use this dual pan-tilt solution and XT camera are supported by thermal imaging solution developers FLIR Systems.
"Site Scan's unique ability to generate detailed structured hotspot clouds is a brand new feature for our customers in engineering construction and mining," said 3DR CEO Chris Anderson. “Now, Site Scan users can easily inspect buildings, structures and facilities, map solar arrays, monitor concrete curing, etc. We are very happy to see how our customers are using thermal imaging technology for their projects.â€
Site scanning users use the M210 equipped with XT and X4S to plan and execute their flights. Images from the two cameras will be automatically uploaded to the cloud and converted into heat maps and models using Pix4D's heat treatment function.
As part of this release, Site Scan users can now also use a single gimbal on any DJI M200 series drone (M200, M210, M210 RTK) to fly with the XT camera. This makes it easier than ever to perform thermal checks: site scanning users can perform single-station gimbal automatic measurements alone, or they can fly manually and tap any part of their iPad screen to obtain temperature readings in specific areas.
"As more and more companies deploy drones in their operations, many of them are aware of the impact that thermal data may have on their websites." said Jan Gasparic, DJI's head of corporate partners. "With the new heat dissipation function of the 3DR website scanning platform, these companies can seamlessly and automatically transform the DJI M200 series drones from the field into meaningful office thermal data analysis."
"Thermal imaging has become a core tool used by commercial drone operators in their work," said Frank Pennisi, President of FLIR's Industrial Business Unit. "The ability to use drones to observe heat and use 3DR Site Scan for mapping will enable the industry to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and do more with thermal imaging."
