Following the trend, the mobile open source framework NativeScript will support AR

As augmented reality becomes a new hot spot in the field of mobile development, companies in the market have joined the ranks of the AR, and the Progress that has just released the open source cross-platform NativeScript framework is one of them.

Augmented reality refers to developers augmenting real-world images with computer-generated sensory inputs (such as graphics and sound). Thanks to the promotion of Pokemon Go, which has become so popular around the world in 2016, AR has become even more popular.

The major giants in the mobile industry have already entered the AR. For example, both Google and Apple have launched the AR SDK for their respective platforms. Now that Progress has announced that it will add AR capabilities to NativeScript supporting Android and iOS platforms.

Todd Anglin, Progress's chief evangelist, demonstrated the latest AR features through blog posts and videos, but users need to wait for a while. Anglin said: "Although it is not yet ready, we are actively developing plug-ins. We look forward to releasing the plug-ins as soon as possible. It is suitable for Angular and vanilla JavaScript NativeScript applications."

Rob Lauer's preview article introduced the Nativescript-ar plug-in, and it currently uses the Apple ARKit API, but it also supports the planned Google ARCore API (which is delayed due to Android launch issues).

Lauer said: "Nativescript-ar is currently in active development. When we release the first version, it will only support ARKit, because ARCore on the Android platform launches a delay. However, the ARKit API and ARCore API are relatively close, In the development process, we all keep the overall footprint in mind to ensure that it can truly support cross-platform. Because the two SDK APIs have a very wide coverage (and due to the functionality of NativeScript), developers are always able to use plugins to take advantage of less popular platforms. Dedicated API."
