The CD4017 is a 5-bit Johnson counter with 10 decode outputs, CP, CR, INH inputs. The Schmitt trigger on the clock input has a pulse shaping function that limits the rise and fall times of the input clock pulse. When INH is low, the counter counts on the rising edge of the clock; otherwise, the counting function is invalid. When CR is high, the counter is cleared. The Johnson counter provides fast operation, 2-input decode strobe, and glitch-free decode output. The anti-lock strobe ensures the correct counting sequence. The decoded output is typically low and remains high for the corresponding clock cycle. The CO signal completes a carry every 10 clock input cycles and acts as a lower ripple clock for the multi-stage count chain. The CD4017 is available in 16-lead multilayer ceramic in-line (D), sealed ceramic dual in-line (J), plastic dual in-line (P) and ceramic sheet carrier (C) packages.
