More and more electronics companies around the world plan to use USB Type-CTM and Power Delivery (PD) technology in new products, spanning multiple electronic applications, the world's leading semiconductor supplier STMicroelectronics , ST for short; New York Stock Exchange code: STM) Releases an industry-proven software solution based on its market-leading STM32 microcontrollers to make USB Type-CTM and Power Transfer (PD) integration work even more easy. Compliant with USB Type-C 1.2 and USB Power Delivery 2.0 specifications, this free STM32 USB-C and PD middleware stack allows customers to quickly deploy this new technology on their end products and take advantage of STM32 ARM® Cortex®-M The rich features of the microcontroller.

The new firmware stack X-CUBE-USB-PD was originally based on the STM32F0 entry-level Cortex-M0 processor, allowing designers to upgrade legacy USB devices, bringing great convenience to end users. USB-C and power transfer technology define a connector that can be plugged in front and back, capable of transmitting all the data (including video or proprietary protocols) required for application functions, acting as a power source up to 100W or charging devices connected to the USB port.
Daniel Colonna, Director of Marketing, STMicroelectronics Microcontrollers, said: "Our USB-C and Power Delivery Software Stack is an example of how the STM32 family can be so successful, with all embedded processing from smartphones to the Internet of Things. The application market sets a reference standard. The STM32 product family brings the world's most price, power, and performance options to the market-recognized industry-standard embedded processor architecture development community, with a powerful ecosystem support behind it. Includes free software and a low-cost development board to help customers minimize development cycles and maximize return on investment."
Cost and printed circuit board space are key advantages of STM32 and new software stack solutions, because STM32 has a wealth of features available on the chip, like voltage comparators, analog-to-digital converters, timers and direct memory access technology. A simple analog front end consisting of several passive components is required.
Other important technical features and benefits of ST's solutions include:
· Supports up to two USB-C ports (power, power or dual roles);
· Line insertion detection, plug direction detection;
· Identify the device role connected to the port and its current capability;
· Establish Vbus power dialogue through the PD communication protocol;
· Process vendor-defined information to identify device or line IDs, or manage Alternate Mode commands;
· Maximum flexibility and adaptability, continuous improvement of technical specifications, and firmware upgrades during the product life cycle;
· Rich processing bandwidth and available resources allow the microcontroller to perform dedicated tasks other than USB-C functions such as power management control, USB 2.0 communication and/or voltage and current monitoring;
· The software library in the X-CUBE-USB-PD package is identical to the STM32Cube API (HAL - Hardware Abstraction Layer), ensuring easy portability between different STM32 families;
· Market-proven mature solutions have been deployed by a number of market leaders to help speed time to market.
STMicroelectronics has launched a STM32 Nucleo Pack feature discovery development kit that supports the new USB-C technology to minimize R&D design effort. The development kit includes a NUCLEO-F072RB development board, a USB-C and PD expansion board and a full-featured USB Type-C cable. The expansion board has two power-receiving dual-role USB Type-C ports and a separate analog analog front end.
The STM32F0 USB-C and PD Nucleo Pack (P-NUCLEO-USB001) are available now.
