The fast charger market for electric vehicles

Around the rapid charging technology standards for electric vehicles, the global dominance is intensifying. The "CHAdeMO" developed by large Japanese automakers such as Toyota and Nissan took the lead in striking the world standard. Subsequently, the eight major European and American auto companies issued the "SAE Combo" standard in May 2012, posing a confrontation with CHAdeMO.

On the other hand, the unique electric vehicle venture company Tesla Motors of America also independently formulated the standard "Tesla Supercharger" other than CHAdeMO and Combo in September 2012, and entered the charging infrastructure construction business. The market for fast chargers for electric vehicles has already emerged.

The fast charger market for electric vehicles

Strive to exceed 100 in 2015

Supercharger only supports Tesla's electric vehicle "Tesla Model S" and future models to be launched. It is a fast charger that is powered by a common grid system.

Atlas plans to set up Supercharger charging equipment in restaurants, cafes and commercial facilities on the roadside. Users can charge the vehicle during meals and shopping. So far, Supercharger has set up a total of 8 locations, including 6 in California, 2 in the East Coast Delaware and Connecticut.

Tesla plans to install more than 100 Supercharger charging stations on major roads in the United States by 2015.

When using SuperCharger standard, it can drive about 240 kilometers with 90kW DC power for 30 minutes. Moreover, the roofs of most charging stations are equipped with solar panels, which can also use the electricity generated by photovoltaic power generation.

In this way, including CHAdeMO for Nissan and Mitsubishi electric vehicles, Combo promoted by General Motors and Ford, and Tesla ’s Supercharger, there may be a situation where three different standards of fast chargers are in the US market. . This situation may make buyers of electric vehicles feel at a loss.

Learn from Apple's ecosystem strategy

VHS vs. Beta ”,“ Blu-ray Disc vs. HD DVD ”...... Although the industry is different, the battle for the dominance of technical standards has been staged more than once. History tells us that only the camp that masters excellent business models can master the dominance. The same is true of the standard fight for fast chargers for electric vehicles.

Tesla Model S (85kWh) users can use Supercharger for free. The company's strategy is to sell the remaining power when it is not charging to the power company, thereby maintaining a free charging service.

The reason why Tesla did not adopt the Combo standard but launched its own standard Supercharger, which relied on the active US power trading market for power trading. If this mechanism can be fully utilized to sell the electric energy produced by solar panels installed in charging stations, then even if electric vehicle users do not charge, infrastructure investment is expected to be recovered in a relatively short period of time.

Apple ’s “iPod and iPhone” and content management software “iTunes” are a successful example in an ecosystem that does not focus on compatibility with other standards and is built on its own products and dedicated infrastructure. Although Tesla's Model S and Supercharger are in different fields, their approach seems to draw on Apple's ecosystem and business strategy.

CHAdeMO opens monthly subscription service

In Japan, where fast charger standards are unified as CHAdeMO, paid charging business has taken shape. Under the leadership of member companies of the CHAdeMO Association, the membership service "CHAdeMO Charge" was launched in November 2012.

Electric car users only need to pay 1,050 yen per month (3,150 yen for corporate users), and can use the fast chargers of CHAdeMO Charge service network affiliates for free unlimited times. Prior to this, most of the quick chargers individually set by enterprises required 500 yen per charge.

From the user's point of view, if it is charged on a pay-per-use basis, it is cost-effective to recharge the battery when it is almost exhausted. According to the charging standard of CHAdeMO Charge, individual users use it twice a month, and legal users use it six times a month without losing money. Moreover, for electric vehicle users, it should be very attractive to be able to recharge at any time and any place without caring about the remaining battery power.

2,400 units have been installed worldwide

On the other hand, for companies that operate charging stations, the cost of 500 yen at a time cannot be recovered at all. However, according to the CHAdeMO Charge mechanism, with the increase in the number of members, monthly subscription fees can bring stable business income. It is expected that while solving the problem of efficiency, the rapid charger will be fully popularized.

According to the official website of the CHAdeMO Association, as of January 31, there are about 1,600 CHAdeMO standard fast chargers in Japan. It is also gradually increasing in Europe and the United States, with a total of approximately 2,400 units already installed worldwide.

Although this number is one or two digits less than the number of gas stations, CHAdeMO is undoubtedly the best one among the practical fast charger standards. If all these quick chargers adopt the mechanism such as CHAdeMO Charge, it will not only greatly facilitate electric vehicle users, but also promote the popularization of electric vehicles and fast chargers.
