Graphene seems to be an omnipotent material. This new material based on carbon has great potential in various fields, such as battery technology and manufacturing airships. In fact, graphene may also be the key to breakthroughs in future wearable technologies. Recently, a research team at Tsinghua University in Beijing used graphene to develop a conductive, more flexible silk. The researchers wrapped the leaves of the silkworms with carbon nanotubes and graphene, which increased the creep of the silkworms by a factor of two, and thus produced silk that was less susceptible to breakage.
The results of this research mean that scientists have found that graphene and silk can be mixed together without the use of chemicals. However, they still need to find the best way to feed silkworms, so that carbon nanotubes can enter the silk to get the best results.
It is understood that this more resilient and conductive silk can be used in a range of wearable technologies, such as smart clothing and plant components. In addition, if graphene can be embedded in existing materials, it also means that the technology will become more environmentally friendly.
