Verizon to launch 5G network commercial test in 5 cities from Baidu VR

Samsung USA and Verizon announced today that they have deployed 5G systems in 5 US cities in preparation for commercial testing of 5G technology. These commercial tests will be launched in April to provide consumers with fixed wireless access through 5G connections to assess user experience and 5G technology performance, and to help further optimize transmission quality.

The 5G trial will use an innovative network system that includes 28GHz millimeter-wave spectrum and advanced beamforming antenna technology. Samsung will install 5G access units in the city's commercial and residential areas, and the system will transmit radio signals to a virtualized core network located at Verizon's data center.

In the pre-test that began in December last year, the 5G system achieved a few gigabytes of throughput with a radio range of up to 1,500 feet (500 meters). Once available, Samsung's 5G system can be upgraded to support new radio and 3GPP standards for next-generation core networks.

Samsung and Verizon’s 5G commercial testing will be conducted first in the United States in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington, DC. The fifth test site is located in Michigan and is scheduled to begin in the Q2 quarter of 2017. These locations all have different topography, community layout, and population density to fully test the performance of 5G systems. The joint trial will include Samsung's pre-commercial 5G solutions, including CPE (client-side equipment), window antennas, and 5G radio and core network solutions. Verizon will provide fixed wireless network services that support wireless Internet access and voice over IP (VoIP) calls.

Kim Yong-ki, head of Samsung’s network business, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Verizon to provide the first end-to-end 5G connection in the United States. This represents a major leap forward in providing 5G fixed wireless access to consumers. We will address the challenges of 5G, and the user feedback we receive will lay the foundation for future business models and consumer applications."

Roger Gurnani, chief information and technical architect of Verizon’s executive vice president, said: “We are very pleased with the progress made by partners such as Samsung in commercial advancement of 5G technologies. The 5G service provided by customers is an important step in evaluating the business model and customer experience of providing wireless broadband through 5G."

Concerning the ever-increasing consumer demand for data transmission, Samsung's network equipment and tools provide a solution in the emerging 5G world. 5G technology is expected to drive the next generation of mobile application development and the development of the Internet of Things, connecting billions of devices, accelerating the implementation of low-latency Gigabit transfer speeds, and providing a richer experience. Samsung has a large number of necessary patents related to the new 5G standard. Samsung has recently successfully implemented 5G base station handover testing and is ready for 5G commercial use. This will enable operators such as Verizon to deploy high-efficiency, low-cost radio equipment in a compact form and overcome the challenges of high spectrum. ?
