To ensure the normal operation of the AV system in an outdoor environment, a number of factors need to be considered: from choosing a reasonable installation location and the correct fixing method, to ensuring the safe use of the device, and even preventing theft and theft. However, the installation method is just one of many elements of outdoor installation, but not all.
In the outdoor installation of an AV system, the use of equipment that meets the requirements of outdoor applications is one of the key steps. As most AV integrators agree, a device that is only allowed indoors can never be used outdoors. When using outdoor equipment, one of the means to evaluate the effective operation of the equipment in the outdoor environment is to check the IEC rating of the equipment, because the outdoor equipment is mostly classified according to the International Electrotechnical Association's 60529 standard (referred to as IEC 529 standard). This standard specifies the requirements for dust and water resistance of equipment under various conditions or conditions.
The IEC 529 standard is usually marked with the letters "IP" plus two numbers. The first number is the dust resistance rating of the device, and the second number is the waterproof performance rating. The higher the value, the higher the level. For example, IP11 means that the device can prevent foreign objects with a diameter greater than 50mm from intruding, and water droplets falling vertically (such as condensed water) will not be damaged. IP68 indicates that the device can be immersed in the specified water pressure for a long time.
Most outdoor AV equipment will not be used underwater for a long time, but if it needs to be permanently installed outdoors, it is recommended that the protection capacity should be higher than the corresponding level of IEC 529. According to this standard, AV devices that meet the IP55 rating (such as JBL WRC version speakers) should be able to withstand the intrusion of sprayed water and various types of harmful dust and foreign objects from all directions. Speakers that meet this level of requirements can be used in outdoor scenes with occlusion protection, which can effectively resist the erosion and damage of rainwater and various dusty objects in heavy rain.
JBL AE Series
To ensure that the equipment being produced meets specific protection levels, manufacturers often use protective materials. Take the JBL WRC version of the speaker as an example. The product uses a weather-resistant drive unit with a DuraFlexTM outer case surface. The inner wood is also bonded with a weather-resistant sealant, so the entire speaker can be effectively dust-proof and waterproof from the unit to the outer box.
The degree of protection of the equipment depends on the actual use. JBL WRC loudspeakers are designed for applications that have been constructed with a degree of architectural protection, so if the equipment is installed under a truss or canopy, the IP55 rating is sufficient. However, if the equipment is directly exposed to the natural environment or used in extreme weather conditions, then the protection level should be higher; for JBL WRX version speakers, the outer box (including the top corners) is made of glass fiber, and the inner seal is used. The gel paint has an IP56 degree of protection and can operate normally even in the event of heavy rains in heavy rain.
JBL AE, PD and VLA Series Speakers are available in all-weather configurations of the above WRC/WRX versions
Of course, the use of weather-resistant equipment for outdoor use is only one step in the installation of the entire outdoor system. The design of AV systems for indoor and outdoor applications is completely different. Compared to indoor systems, outdoor systems have more unique elements that deserve special attention, such as power amplification issues and video clarity issues. Therefore, when designing an outdoor AV system, the specific application requirements of the system should be analyzed in depth to ensure that the entire system can serve this demand. In contrast, understanding the outdoor performance of the equipment used is only a small step in the successful installation of the entire outdoor AV system.
