In the past few years, there have been many flexible electronic skin patch concepts that can manage drugs or monitor health, but the latest version of the researchers at the University of Tokyo has added an LED display.
This ultra-thin patch is made of a flexible, breathable material that measures and displays the wearer's heart rate data. Using nano-electrodes and retractable wiring, the patch is equipped with a miniature LED array that adapts to the curvature of the skin and displays dynamic images such as simple ECG waveforms. The idea is not only to provide health information to the wearer, but also to let others know the user's condition in an emergency.
In addition, sensors can be paired with smartphones to store biometric data and even transfer it to the cloud. The researchers believe that the patch can be a non-invasive health monitoring system for the elderly or the family, and medical staff can remotely monitor the wearer's condition.
This patch can stretch to 145% of its original length and is more resistant to wear than previous skin displays. The University of Tokyo and Japan's Dai Nippon PrinTIng hope to begin mass production of the device within the next three years.
