Recently, Japan Sharp said that it will introduce energy-saving equipment using LED technology into the lighting equipment market, in order to establish new profit pillars in addition to the panel and solar battery business.
Due to rising power generation costs and rising greenhouse gas emissions, LEDs with longer energy savings and longer life are promising as next-generation lighting devices. However, the current LED cost is higher than the average fluorescent tube, and Sharp will face fierce competition from Philips and Toshiba.
It is understood that Sharp's new LED lighting equipment will be launched in Japan on September 1, and the price will range from 44,100 yen to 199,500 yen (410-1,856 US dollars). The time of overseas launch has not yet been decided, and Sharp is not willing to talk about sales or market share targets. But Sharp director Kazutaka Ihori said that the domestic domestic lighting market will reach 1 trillion yen in 2012, while LEDs account for about 30% of overall sales.
