Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) recently introduced SoundMAX® audio processing algorithms and integrated circuit solutions for the next generation of HDTV (HDTV) designs. As part of a broad product line of Analog Devices' Advantiv® advanced TV solutions, SoundMAX for TV audio solutions delivers key audio subsystem functions for high-quality sound in plasma and LCD flat-panel digital TVs."The rapid growth of plasma and LCD flat-panel digital TVs has created new demands for audio signal processing links," said Bill Bucklen, director of advanced television at Analog Devices. "Although design engineers are working hard to provide near-surround speaker systems or pre-installed ones." Realizing the realistic audio experience of home theater systems, but manufacturers must address the challenge of smaller HDTV sizes, where space reserved for high-fidelity speakers is becoming more limited in HDTV. Market data from the Consumer Electronics Association shows: 85% of HDTVs do not connect to external audio/video receivers or multiple speakers, which means that most HDTVs must be able to utilize the internal audio system to deliver high quality audio."
The SoundMAX algorithm library contains more than 60 algorithms, and TV audio design engineers can use this industry-only platform to meet the design needs of the entire HDTV audio signal link. This complete solution helps system design engineers tap into the full audio potential of the HDTV experience, providing a versatile resource to cover TV platform designs at different price points.
"ADI's SoundMAX audio solution integrates audio building blocks, algorithms, system-level innovation and design support on one platform, enabling HDTV design engineers to achieve the gold standard in TV audio," Bucklen said. "In addition, users are in need." Design engineers can reduce development costs by 20% or more compared to solutions that buy TV audio components and software from multiple vendors."
Industry-leading audio performance for HDTV
The SoundMAX TV audio solution includes all the analog and digital signal processing necessary to build a complete HD audio signal link, multi-channel audio decoding, and post-processing and algorithm-supported audio enhancement. These include Analog Devices' advanced TV audio processors, Class D audio amplifiers, HDMI receivers, design environments such as SigmaStudioTM graphical programming tools for ADI audio processors, and audio algorithms. This includes both audio algorithms developed by Analog Devices and audio algorithms developed by third parties.
Audio Processor: Enhance HDTV experience and reduce time to market
The SoundMAX TV Audio Solutions Platform includes a range of cost-effective, fully programmable audio processors that reduce the delivery time of audio enhancements in plasma and LCD flat panel HDTV designs. ADI's ADAV4622, ADAV4601, and ADAV4322 SoundMAX audio processors have built-in powerful embedded processing engines that manage the audio performance of space-constrained speakers in today's thin LCD and plasma flat panel TV designs. This "Digital Audio Enhancement Engine" performs all the necessary processing to deliver outstanding sound with HD video quality. This feature works with high-performance, multi-channel, 24-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to receive analog line input signals from high-definition devices such as set-top boxes and DVD players, and to drive analog or A PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) digital audio signal that excites an amplifier or an auxiliary output amplifier. The audio processor works with Analog Devices' latest HDMI receivers and Class D power stages to help design engineers reduce "popcorn noise and click" audio problems during system power-up, seamlessly change audio sources, and provide matching High-definition video currently displays the high-quality audio required.
Class D Amplifier: Get a large volume from a small HDTV speaker
HDTV audio design engineers can take advantage of Analog Devices' SoundMAX Class D audio amplifiers, the ADAU1592, and the ADAU1513, which have an optimized interface to HDTV audio processors that deliver up to 18 W of dual-channel output with 0.005% THD+N. In addition, ADI's space-saving Class D audio amplifiers provide the power they need to deliver the same audio experience for users accustomed to large HDTV sound. These Class D amplifiers work seamlessly with the SoundMAX audio processor.
Complete HDTV Audio Algorithm Library
Top-level audio performance requires a complete library of SoundMAX audio processing algorithms. ADI's SoundMAX Audio Enhancement Algorithm Library supports popular audio algorithms from third-party developers such as Dolby Laboratories, SRS Labs, and BBE Sound, as well as various TV audio algorithms developed by Analog Devices, including:
Automatic volume control – compensates for volume changes around the surround channel - generates 5 discrete channels of virtual surround with 2 audio channels - converts 5.1 channel surround audio to 2 channel binaural format dynamic bass boost – ensures lower audio power Receive more bass-enhanced late-night listening modes – weaken high-level audio channels and boost quiet audio levels
Spatializer – Generate rich 3D surround audio lip sync delay for headphones or stereo speakers - Compensate for various delay programmable parameter equalizers for video processing – Provide customized home theater audio effects
Without any knowledge of DSP programming, design engineers can use SigmaStudio's “drag and drop†interface to select from the large SoundMAX library of pre-developed TV audio processing modules and easily build multi-channel audio platforms.
