South Korean government joins hands with Samsung and Hynix to develop MRAM chips
According to a Yonhap report, the Korean government announced that it has cooperated with semiconductor manufacturers Samsung Electronics and Hynix to develop a Spin Transfer Torque-MagneTIc Random Access Memory (MRAM) project, To maintain Korea's leading position in the semiconductor industry.
Park Tae-sung, head of the semiconductor and panel division of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of South Korea, said that once the STT-MRAM development is completed, South Korea will have about 45% of the 30-nanometer process memory chip market in 2015, and it is estimated that the market will There is an output value of 53 billion US dollars. Park also pointed out that this joint R & D project will allow South Korea to possess basic technology and support South Korea to maintain world-class competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.
The government plans to cover half of the cost of the cooperation project at 24 billion won (about 20.8 million US dollars), and the other half will be jointly funded by Samsung and Hynix. The South Korean government said that the R & D center has installed a 12-inch (300mm) MagneTIc Thin Film DeposiTIon System and other chip manufacturing equipment, which is superior to the 8-inch (200mm) used by Japanese competitors when developing STT-MRAM. The deposition system is expected to give South Korea a lead in research and development.
