As a new kind of light source, LED is increasingly being integrated into people's lives, and its development cannot be separated from people's demand for lighting. When LEDs are used as a new source of light to replace the previous generation of light sources, they must have more acceptable advantages than the previous generation of light sources, so that the chances of replacement will be greater.
Compared to traditional light sources (such as fluorescent and incandescent lamps), LEDs are 5-20 times more efficient than conventional light sources when they are close to theoretical conversion efficiency. Even at this stage of mass production, the level is between 2-15 times, and combined with the advantages of its directivity, the gap will be even greater. Due to the change of the principle of illumination, its lifetime will be much higher than that of traditional light sources. In addition, since LEDs also have a series of advantages such as no harm to health and the environment, they have been recognized as the most suitable light source for the next generation at this stage.
Why do you need LED modular packaging?
LEDs are used as lighting products at this stage, and the most direct and simplest application is to replace them (including the replacement of bulbs and fluorescent tubes). This is relatively easy to accept. Except for energy saving, there is no significant change in the appearance and effect of the product. Of course, as lighting products become more and more personalized today, lamps and lamps themselves have gradually evolved into light quality indicators. However, when LEDs have many advantages, they also have some factors that are not widely accepted, such as glare and cost. For the luminaire structure that everyone is more accustomed to, since LEDs are inherently different from traditional light sources (such as directionality), they are now used in conjunction with traditional luminaire structures, and their own characteristics will be submerged in the present. There is a simple replacement for lamps.
To give a simple example: LED downlights and LED bulbs are currently on the market. A light source needs to be placed in the downlight, and for conventional lighting, the bulb is already a light source. If it corresponds to today's LEDs, the bulbs already belong to a luminaire structure. The question we need to think about is: When an LED bulb is installed in a traditional lamp, can the light source installed in the LED bulb be directly installed in the downlight structure? The answer is yes. Moreover, its cost effect will be better than that of LED bulbs. However, the problem with such applications is that when a non-standard light source structure appears to the consumer, the consumer may not be able to make a simple replacement. In view of this situation, one of the problems currently facing the light source manufacturers is: What is a standard light source structure?
Our answer to this question is: modularization and standardization of the light source by the packaged enterprise. Only the LED light source is modularized and standardized, and this work is done by the current packaging company, and the cost will be optimized throughout the replacement process. The following will briefly describe the outstanding advantages of the module LED in the replacement process of the light source from several aspects.
The advantages of light source in reliability
The thermal impact of LED packaging as one of the top three effects (heat effects, electrostatic effects, moisture effects) affecting reliability is an important cause of LED attenuation. According to the Arrhenius model for LED chips, for every 10 °C increase in the junction temperature of the LED, the lifetime of the LED itself will be reduced by one and a half.
Of course, for LED packages, life-related factors also include material properties. For example, the decrease in the transmittance of the encapsulant, the decrease in the reflectivity of each optical material, etc., will cause the light attenuation of the overall device. The biggest influence here is the heat impact.
Combined with LED packaging, an important solution to temperature rise is to reduce the thermal resistance between the materials and the thermal resistance of the interface. The modular package form structurally reduces the bond layer and reduces overall thermal resistance. Its structure is shown in Figure 1.
