With eye tracking system to play games without hands and still invincible

Tencent Digital (Compiled: Remarks) The Tobii Eye Tracker 4C Eye Tracking System has been in our office for a long time. Its packaging is a very slim box with an eye tracking sensor, vendor information and Instructions for use can guide us step-by-step how to use the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C to add eye tracking to a laptop or PC. What is Tobii Eye and what can it do? In fact, the answers to these questions can be easily understood through packaging and design.

The Tobii Eye Tracker 4C itself is an eye tracking system that can be mounted to the edge of the display and monitor how the reflected laser light moves on the screen by monitoring the reflected laser light. And this latest Tobii Eye Tracker 4C adds an extra gaming experience, but can it have a deeper impact on our game? We can take a look together.

Complex settings, but once and for all

Inside the package is a metal strip that can be permanently attached to the monitor and notebook. Tobbi's packaging explicitly warned that the installation of the equipment should be conducted in strict accordance with the guidelines. If the installation location is not correct and you want to remove it, it will cause permanent damage to the display and notebook.

However, since it is an evaluation, we are still "disregarding advice" and want to see what happens after the installation is completed. Yes, when I want to remove the Tobii Eye from my laptop screen, it really takes a lot of patience, of course, also need a credit card. With unremitting efforts, I successfully removed the adhesive with the help of a credit card. Although the notebook is safe, the adhesive on the back of Tobii Eye is no longer usable.

This is indeed a problem, if we want to replace the notebook or monitor, then Tobii Eye must be reinstalled, and the original equipment is no longer available, unless you are clever, but for ordinary users, it is very difficult.

Adjustment

Although the installation was a bit tricky, the whole process went smoothly. After installing the software, Tobii Eye will start immediately, as if there is also a pair of eyes on us in Tobii Eye. It stares at our every move, and tracks our position on the screen, and it also provides tracking calibration.

First, the system will appear four blue dots on the four edges of the screen, and prompt the user to stare at it, knowing that after the calibration is successful, it will switch to the next one. This is actually a simple connection process, not only for calibration, but also for us to adapt to the speed of eye movements. Just like we say "Siri" or "Ok Google" a few times, the system will recognize our voice.

After the calibration is completed, the system will enter the interface of a simulated space shuttle cockpit. This is a control that further allows the user to practice how to use the eyeball to perform subtle movements and follow-up tracking.

At this time, a virtual planet will appear opposite, and we will need to aim at the target under the guidance of Tobii Eye and destroy it before the spacecraft hits the planet. At this time, there was no control on the screen except for a front sight. At the beginning we did feel a bit confused. We really hope that we have a mouse or keyboard to help us complete the task.

And we look at the asteroid with our eyes is equivalent to aiming at the target, and then press the space bar to launch the weapon. Although this is a very simple teaching, it feels wonderful and even addictive. After the demonstration, we will inevitably wonder what other in-depth features of the Tobii Eye are still available.

how to work

This Tobii Eye Tracker 4C emits a kind of laser reflection into our eyes. When used, the face will always be controlled by these infrared rays to detect the direction and movement of the eyeball. It should be noted that, in theory, if you wear glasses or contact lenses during the calibration process, the accuracy will be affected. However, from our actual testing, the effect is as normal as usual.

Through the pulse of the optic fibre and the recording of the apparatus, plus the complicated programming operation, Tobii Eye can feedback the direction and position of the gaze to the screen.

At the same time, the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C supports head tracking and also monitors the direction of our head through six near-infrared emission lines. Head tracking is similar to other similar products, so we also need to pay attention to every move. However, at present, in addition to Elite Dangerous and its own demonstration demo, head tracking does not currently support other software or games.

Whether it is eye tracking or head tracking, the entire system uses Tobii's software to input information into specific software and games after translation. Although there will be more Windows systems to support in the future, very few are currently available.

High requirements for configuration

Tobii Eye's processing speed of information depends to a large extent on the computing power of the computer's CPU, but it will not add too much burden on the device and will not affect the overall performance. In the Windows system, the use is basically smooth, but if the system itself is doing more background tasks, there may be a little bit of stagnation and delay.

Only when we choose to turn on eye tracking, Tobii Eye will begin to track our eye movements, and will use diagnostic tools to detect the basic control speed, including sensitivity and accuracy, but it will consume a certain amount of PC performance. .

On Gaze Trace, there was a serious delay in use, but fortunately this was just software for demonstrations, so the culprit was Gaze Trace and not the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C itself.

In the game, the impact of the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C on the frame rate of the picture itself is negligible. In the FPS shooting game of “Extreme Enemy: Human Separation”, the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C does not have much impact on the game speed. Therefore, whether to turn the eye tracking function on and off depends entirely on the preferences of the player and the user.

However, in Gaze Trace, we saw a huge impact on performance. The notebook we tested was the Dell Inspiron 7000. Although this was a mid-range product, the original frame rate was 60fps when running "Beyond: Human Separation". After starting tracking, the picture quality dropped to 35 to 40fps. .

To be fair, Gaze Trace is not a must-have feature in the game, it's more of a demonstration. So if you don't want to use the "eyeball" to play the game, then it's best to turn off this feature before the game.

Become a "killer" weapon in the game

On Tobii’s website, we see that currently the official only supports a few games, in addition to the above-mentioned “Exclusion: Human Divisiveness”, it also includes the “Block All Around the World”, “Elite: Crisis” and the upcoming “ Watchdog 2".

In our test of “Block All Around the World”, “Elite: Crisis” and “Assassin's Creed: Hero”, each game has a very rich eye tracking function. Even some games can perform functions such as scrolling and jumping, and the experience is very good.

In the game, the eye tracking function does not appear in the normal state, but once you enter the battle state or start walking, you will find subtle changes in the visual field. You can "watch" wherever you want to go when you dodge, and then you move toward your goal.

The Tobii Eye Tracker 4C can even distinguish valid or ineffective target operations in the game. When the target we are looking at cannot perform the next operation, it will not move itself. At the same time, the movement of the sight in the design game is also very fast.

What else can you do?

In addition to supporting games, Tobii Eye Tracker 4C also supports the Windows Hello feature, which is Microsoft's face recognition security login feature in Windows 10. As long as the hardware is compatible, we can just sit at the computer and use the camera to face us. Face device identity directly login system.

However, most of the previous Windows Hello features were only available on Microsoft's own Surface device, and the addition of Tobii Eye Tracker 4C allowed us to use this feature on other Windows system devices.

The use of the overall experience is quite "smooth", once connected to the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C and open, just go to the Windows 10 settings interface, open the Windows Hello feature. The system will automatically use the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C as a detection device and start the setup. A few seconds of scanning included on the face, fast and stable.

Competition products

Currently in the market, Tobii Eye is basically a "sole copy" and there are currently not many competitors. Although there are some products that support eye-tracking, the use of traditional keyboards and mice is not as powerful as the Tobii Eye.

If you have to say a competitive product, it should be Steelseries Sentry. It sells for $140 (approximately RMB 945) and the price is slightly lower, but it is still based on Tobii's technology. The purpose of the Steelseries Sentry is not games, but to help users control broadcast video. The same goes for Razer's Stargazer, which sells for $150 (about RMB1013).

Is it worth buying

To tell the truth, it is not the best time. The Tobii Eye Tracker 4C is priced at $150 (approximately RMB 1,013). It is not cheap and currently only supports a small number of games and Windows Hello features. Maybe more games will be added in the future, but now For ordinary users, it is not worth it.

Although Tobii has built a wonderful future for us, it is also troublesome to move the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C from one device to another when changing hardware. We hope that Tobii will be able to choose a more convenient and simple way to install, instead of using simple and crude glue now.

So unless you're a fan of new technology, the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C really isn't for the average user.
