Morankov made this bold prediction as national policymakers consider the next generation of wireless technology to be the key to ensuring national security and competitiveness.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Morenkov said that the transformation of the entire industry is now much faster than the promotion of 4G technology ten years ago. In contrast, the biggest difference in this change is China.
In terms of deploying 4G technology, China's telecom industry is several years behind the rest of the world, but 5G technology will be deployed as early as 2019.
Morinkov said, "Historically, every time telecommunications technology is upgraded, the industrial structure will change." He recalled that before the launch of 4G, "people talk about Motorola, Nokia and BlackBerry."
The aura of these companies has now faded, in part because 4G has accelerated the transition to touch-screen smartphones, and the iPhone, released in 2007, opened the era of touch-screen smartphones.
It is worth mentioning that in 2017, nearly two-thirds of Qualcomm's revenue came from Chinese customers. In January this year, Qualcomm also signed a 5G partnership agreement with Chinese mobile phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Lenovo, Oppo and Vivo.
Morenkov said that 5G will open a door for such changes, and most importantly, this is the first time in the history of the industry that a powerful Chinese mobile phone manufacturer provides products for the entire world.
