Intel's mobile phone chip business depends on CDMA?

Intel's investment in the latest data plane chip technology may be a strategy that can be called protective or preemptive, and the obvious key to the company's survival in the mobile phone market.

This is the message that Intel CEO Brian Krzanich revealed at the third quarter earnings conference. He mentioned in the highly competitive data market: "The focus is not on how many vendors, but whether they can be Maintain a pace of pace and keep technology at the forefront."

What about the old data machine technology? Intel's data chip business has so far lacked the CDMA technology originally invented by Qualcomm; and this is missing. According to industry sources, earlier this month, Taiwan's VIA Telecom quietly sold some of its assets to Intel, including CDMA assets.

According to Will Strauss, general manager of market research firm Forward Concepts, "CDMA technology is needed for all smart phones in the Verizon network." In addition, some networks in Taiwan and South Korea, as well as China Telecom, are also needed in conjunction with LTE: "Without CDMA, Intel can't make a difference in the LTE modem market."

A CEVA spokesperson confirmed that VIA's CDMA modem is based on the company's DSP core; Intel's modem chip was acquired by Intel in January 2011 from Infineon's 2G/3G modem technology. It is also based on the DSP core of CEVA.

When asked about the transaction between VIA and Intel, the CEVA spokesperson said that VIA's business: "very focused on data machines," and the company has some applications and possibly some SoC development. Experience: "Those may be useful to Intel, or may be useless." His observation is that the transaction between VIA and Intel will add CDMA/EV-DO stacks to Intel's chips.

It is worth noting that only Qualcomm and MediaTek have so-called "global universal data chip", including support for CDMA; Marvell's mobile phone chip can also support five frequency bands, but does not include CDMA. Strauss said that MediaTek: "Be smart enough to use the VIA Telecom CDMA modem in the LTE product line very early;" and the cooperation between MediaTek and VIA Telecom has been rewarded by the design of China Telecom. .

Now that Intel has seized another opportunity (CDMA), what next? Strauss believes that early market speculation that Intel's LTE modem may be stationed in some iPhones next year will be revived - but this does not take into account that most iPhones already support CDMA. He expects Intel to launch the first CDMA-enhanced data processor chip in the first quarter of next year.
