A truly eye-catching product: luminous fabric

The textile innovation department of Forster Rohner AG in Switzerland uses the Point LED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors to make the fabric sparkle. These products range from in-line LED curtains, shades and haute couture. PointLED is a circular light source that fits snugly into the fabric. The use of LEDs in this new and unusual field has once again proven that small LEDs are used in a wide range of applications, and are not limited to general lighting, industrial lighting or automotive lighting.

Forster Rohner's e-broidery® technology is an innovative, luminous fabric from a new perspective.

Round, compact, perforated assembly

The most obvious difference between PointLED and conventional SMT-LED is its round package. Because of this, it fits perfectly into the standard jack on the smallest printed circuit board. The perfect, flat perforated assembly, that is, the LED package is "invisible" inside the printed circuit board, while conventional LED components protrude from the board surface. With a flat surface, other components, such as light guides, controllers, or keyboards, are easily installed or connected. However, in terms of assembly, Osram PointLED is extremely flexible and can take advantage of standard surface mount (SMT) technology in addition to perforated assembly technology. Designed specifically for space-constrained applications, PointLED has a package diameter of only 2 mm and an overall height of only 0.775 mm. The reflector itself is only 0.5 mm high and can be well embedded in thin printed circuit boards or fabrics.

New technology allows LEDs to be seamlessly embedded in fabrics

Using specially developed e-broideryTM technology, Forster Rohner's fabric innovation department seamlessly embeds Osram PointLED into the fabric. For the first time, the company successfully used industrial processes to embed active luminaires into fabrics without affecting the basic characteristics of the fabric, such as washability, surface feel or drape. At the same time, embedded LEDs face special challenges. Thomas Brandes, project manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors' German headquarters, said: “It is clear that the fabrics designed by Forster Rohner are cleaned after all. PointLEDs are extremely durable and have a long life, making them ideal for outdoor use for long periods of time. And Forster Rohner is quite handy in color matching."

Forster Rohner's first products with embedded OSRAM PointLEDs have recently been launched. It is used in a wide range of applications, from interior design to fashion design to advertising materials.
