Alibaba's new video service is coming soon: 90% paid content

The online video market has now become a new high for the domestic media and Internet companies. Alibaba has begun to enter the online video field after taking advantage of Alibaba's involvement in the entertainment business.

Liu Chunning, president of Alibaba Digital Entertainment Group, stated that Alibaba will launch online streaming video services in the Chinese market in the next two months. The new service is named "TBO", which means "Tmall Box Office" ("Tmall Box Office"). This service will be aligned with U.S. Netflix and HBO.

In terms of content, TBO will source content from China and other countries, and will also produce content on its own. Unlike most domestic competitors, about 90% of TBO content will be paid content. Liu Chunning stated that users can pay monthly fees, and they can also pay for each content. The remaining 10% will be free.

Interestingly, Alibaba.com acquired a 16.5% stake in Youku Tudou, the largest online video platform in China last year, and it is unclear whether TBO will establish a connection with Youku Tudou in the future.
