Hitachi Cable Co., Ltd. announced the development of a high-power red LED chip (1) that provides a luminous flux of up to 55 lumens (2), (3). This luminous flux is achieved by increasing the size of the LED chip and using a thin wire electrode structure.
LEDs are semiconductor solid-state components that convert electrical energy directly into light. LEDs are widely used for indicator lights in various equipment, devices, and devices because of the ability to emit light of a particular color at low operating voltages without a filter. Recent improvements in luminous efficiency, as well as the widespread commercial manufacturing of blue and green LEDs, have rapidly expanded the use of LEDs in full color display and lighting applications, including traffic lights, automotive taillights and large outdoor display panels.
Hitachi Wire manufactures and supplies aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) epitaxial wafers and phosphatide (AlGaInP) epitaxial wafers, both of which are compound semiconductors used to fabricate red LEDs. In order to meet the demand for LEDs with higher luminous efficiency, the company has also developed a high-brightness red LED chip (hereinafter referred to as "MR-LED chip") which forms a metal reflector (MR) under the light-emitting layer. This product is currently being supplied to LED package manufacturers and other customers.
Through its LED business, Hitachi Cable recognizes that there is a growing need for lumen output LED chips. The company adopted a fine electrode structure and increased the size of the chip to develop a high-power red LED chip that provides up to 55 lumens of output.
One way to increase the lumen output per chip is to increase the chip size. However, larger chips increase the difficulty of distributing uniform current throughout the luminescent layer. On the other hand, if a large electrode is placed on the upper layer of the chip to obtain a more uniform current distribution, light from the light-emitting layer is blocked, thereby reducing light extraction efficiency.
In order to solve these problems when developing new LED chips, Hitachi Cable does not use larger electrodes, but uses two attenuation electrodes on the upper layer of the chip to receive power, a central electrode connecting the two electrodes, and multiple extensions. Thin wire electrode to the center electrode.
By using thin wire electrodes, Hitachi Cable successfully achieves uniform current distribution across the entire chip surface without blocking light from the illuminating layer, resulting in a maximum luminous flux of 55 lumens in a large LED chip of 1 mm x 1 mm size - equivalent Combined output of 21 MR-LED chips (0.33 mm x 0.33 mm).
