Routing priority

Routing priority

As mentioned earlier, each routing protocol has its own standards to measure the quality of routing (some use next hops, some use bandwidth, and some use delays, which are generally quantified by metric Metric in routing data), And each routing protocol tries to send the routing that it thinks is the best to the routing table, so we can get different routes to the same target network from different protocols.

Although each routing protocol gives metric values, due to the different meanings of the metric values used in each protocol, there is no comparability between them. This requires a strategy to decide which route to use. According to the strategy to determine the optimal route, we add it to the routing table and use it to forward packets. Generally, we use routing priority to judge the quality of routes obtained by different routing protocols. Each routing protocol has its own priority. When the routing between different routing protocols conflicts, the route obtained by the routing protocol with the highest priority is selected. The routing priority is an empirical value obtained based on factors such as the advantages and disadvantages of the routing algorithm, and can also be manually modified by the network administrator.

In the above figure, the three routing protocols RIP, OSPF, and IGRP each obtained a route to the target network 10.0.0.0. We assume that the order of routing priority among the three protocols is OSPF> IGRP> RIP, and finally select the OSPF route as the optimal route.
