Samsung intends to increase Apple processor OEM price TSMC is expected to receive orders

According to the Korea Times, Samsung asked Apple to pay a higher price to use its mobile application processor from Austin, Texas. Samsung began supplying A5 processors to Apple in 2011. Apple's latest iPhone 5 uses the A6 processor, which is manufactured by Samsung at 32nm.

The industry believes that Samsung's request for price increases may be related to three major problems, such as insufficient capacity, low yield, and high cost. If Apple completely "goes to Samsung", this time it is possible to reduce the order placed on Samsung, and the rate of processor orders to TSMC has increased significantly.

Some securities institutions are optimistic that TSMC will take orders for Apple processors, and expects to grab nearly 40% of orders in the second half of next year, accounting for 5% of revenue. Some brokers believe that TSMC will use the most advanced 20-nm process from 2013 to produce processors for Apple.

Once Samsung's price increase is established, TSMC and other companies trying to win orders for Apple processors will have the opportunity to enter. In particular, the A6 processor built into the iPhone5 is Apple's first self-developed "ARMv7" processor system single-chip (SoC). In the future, IC design companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek will directly cast chips to the chip foundry. TSMC's chances of accepting Apple processors have increased dramatically.
