What do you need to consider for digital temperature sensor selection?

In order to achieve optimal performance and ensure system robustness, system monitoring measurements must be performed. One of the typical measurement items required is the ambient temperature. Using a simple digital temperature sensor for this measurement will provide the system designer with the assurance that the component is functioning properly; the system is within its performance or calibration limits; it does not expose the user to danger.

After the measurement is completed, the ambient temperature is usually adjusted accordingly by the microcontroller in the system. The system monitoring microcontroller can change the fan speed, turn off non-essential system processes, or bring the system smart into power save mode. System designers need to fully and correctly understand the digital temperature sensor specifications to design the system and take the best measures for the measurement results. In addition, a comprehensive understanding of the sensor specifications will ensure that the trade-offs are made when selecting digital temperature sensor devices.

When selecting a digital temperature sensor (also known as a serial output temperature sensor), the main specifications to consider include accuracy, resolution, power consumption, interface, and package.

Precision

Digital temperature sensor accuracy represents the error between the sensor reading and the actual temperature of the system. In the product manual, the accuracy index corresponds to the temperature range. There are usually several high-precision indicators for different temperature ranges. For the temperature range of –25°C to 100°C, ?2?C accuracy is very common. Analog Devices' ADT75, Maxim's DS75, NaTIonal's LM75, and TI's TMP75 all have this precision node. However, there are more accurate devices. For example, TI's TMP275 has an accuracy of ?0.5?C over a temperature range of 20?C to 100?C.
